Apparent murder-suicide at George Scott III's New Bedford home: What DA Quinn has shared

NEW BEDFORD — An apparent murder-suicide of a father and son at 1643 Phillips Road in New Bedford's North End is under investigation, District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III said Friday.

Upon entering the residence Friday morning around 8:09 a.m. during a well-being check, Quinn said police located two deceased individuals. It appears from the evidence recovered to be a murder-suicide involving a Dante Hazard, age 8 and his father, George Scott III, age 53. Though it has not been confirmed by the State Medical Examiner's office, "Scott appears to have killed the boy with a sharp object before taking his own life.  We are awaiting the medical examiner’s confirmation of these and other details," said Gregg Miliote, a spokesperson for the DA's office.

Bristol County District Attorney's office and New Bedford police were on site at 1643 Phillips Road in New Bedford.

According to Quinn, evidence recovered from the scene includes several knives.

"It’s a very serious and tragic matter certainly for the family of the deceased," said Quinn.

Mother of Scott's son, Lisa Hazard, went missing in 2019: What we know

Quinn said Dante is the son of Lisa Hazard, who Scott reported missing to Fall River police in April 2019.

"As you may be aware, through our Missing Person Initiative, this case was one of the cases we highlighted," said Miliote.

He said the DA's office, Fall River and New Bedford police and State Police have been investigating the March 2019 disappearance of Hazard. Quinn said his office was at the property on May 17 with a search warrant relative to a missing person investigation related to Hazard.

"Those warrants have been sealed by the court as part of the ongoing investigation," said Quinn.
