DA seeks death penalty for suspect accused of fatal stabbing at a Surf City business

A 22-year-old man could face the death penalty for allegedly killing a clerk at a CBD store in Surf City in August 2022.

Charles Michael Haywood, of Holly Springs, appeared in Pender County Superior Court on Monday, March 27. According to reports, District Attorney Ben David asked to proceed with a capital murder trial.

According to previous reports, Haywood was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and armed robbery at the Exotic Hemp Co. on Hwy 50 on Wednesday, Aug. 24. The victim was Margaret Nicole Bracey. She was 42.

Arrest warrants indicate that he was armed with a knife and stole $750 worth of merchandise from the store.
