'Wicked' casts a spell

BOSTON – “Wicked,” has landed in Boston for a six-week engagement through July 24 at Citizens Bank Opera House, 539 Washington St.

Winner of three Tony Awards and a local favorite, it is based on Concord author Gregory Maguire’s book “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West,” the story of Oz before the arrival of Dorothy.

Lissa deGuzman and Jennafer Newberry play the parts of frenemies Elphaba and Glinda.

The core of the story is the journey of Elphaba, who was born with green skin. As she struggles for recognition, she develops an unlikely friendship with her popular school roommate Glinda, unexpected love with the youth Fiyero, and disillusionment with the leadership of the Wizard. Ultimately, she chooses to break free of that world, after it brands her as evil and misinterprets her efforts do do good.

For many people, the show’s defining moment is the first act finale, with Elphaba’s seeringly powerful singing of ‘‘Defying Gravity’’ as she ascends into the air.

Weekend performances for the duration of the run are 8 p.m. Fridays, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturdays and 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Sundays. Tickets start at $53.50. www.broadwayinboston.com.
