Dagger, Martial Arts Knives Found In Carry-On Bag At Reagan National

ARLINGTON, VA — Transportation Security Administration officers found 23 prohibited items in an Alexandria man’s carry-on bag on Wednesday as he attempted to go through security at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

The man was carrying nine disposable scalpels, eight folding locking-blade knives, three martial arts throwing knives; one dagger; one switchblade; and one pair of brass knuckles.

The TSA officers located the weapons when the man’s carry-on bag entered the security checkpoint’s X-ray machine. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police were then alerted and responded to the checkpoint and issued the man a citation.

“Even in the sometimes chaotic environment of the screening checkpoints, the TSA officers at our airport do an amazing job every day by keeping dangerous items out of the aircraft cabin,” John Busch, TSA's federal security director of Ronald Reagan National Airport, said in a statement. “It’s important to acknowledge them and the significance of their mission.”

According to the TSA, the man would have been permitted to pack all 23 items in a checked bag at the airport. However, passengers are not permitted to carry these types of weapons into the cabin of an aircraft.

Officers have detected nine guns in carry-on bags at Reagan National Airport so far in 2022, a TSA spokeswoman said Thursday. In 2021, a total of 30 handguns were confiscated at Reagan National Airport, the most ever in a year, even though the airport saw fewer passengers due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
