Your Daily Briefing: Why Southern Baptist Convention membership is dropping

Good morning and welcome to your Daily Briefing. I'm politics and investigations editor Duane Gang.

The Nashville-based Southern Baptist Convention is the nation's largest Protestant denomination.

But how many members are there and how many churches? The numbers have been dropping in recent years, even as the SBC remains one of the most influential denominations in American Christianity.

A SBC had its largest single-year decline in membership in 2022, religion reporter Liam Adams writes.

But Liam reports on how the picture is more complicated. A new report details why there was a larger decline and whether it is having an impact on financial giving.

You can read Liam's story here for the latest.

Meanwhile, Liam is one of the leading reporters in the nation covering the Southern Baptist Convention, which is facing another mementous annual meeting in June. This time, the role of women could be front and center, among other topics.

Liam, along with colleague Katherine Burgess of The Commercial Appeal, will be in New Orleans June 11-14 to report on the the Southern Baptist Convention's important annual meeting. Be sure to follow their work in the weeks ahead.
