Daily Devotional: King of Kings

On his robe and on his thigh he has a name inscribed, “King of kings and Lord of lords.” — Revelation 19.16 NRSVUE

I’ve used popular Christmas carols as backdrops for my sermons during the Advent season. One Sunday, the hymn was “Joy to the World.” It begins, “Joy to the world, the Lord is come, let earth receive her king.”

The word “king” isn’t very modern or democratic. We elect our leaders. The idea that someone would get a job or a position because of birth can be offensive to some.

I’ve met those who wish to change biblical language to make it modern and palatable to the sophisticated and politically correct ears. This is particularly true concerning the language of monarchs and kings. They reason that our modern ears cannot relate to this archaic concept. I’m not sure that there is a problem here. The fact is, Jesus is King.

Jesus did not come as the CEO of the church. He did not run for the office of Messiah. He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords. So, when we get to that carol this Christmas season, let us proclaim our faith singing joyfully, “Let earth her receive her king!”

Prayer: Lord, Christmas is here. A time to celebrate the love You show through Your son. Thank You.
