Daily Devotional: Someone important

"God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another." — 1 John 4:9-11. NRSVUE

When Mrs. Dodds received the letter at the Nursing Home, the staff thought she’d be thrilled. There, boldly in the corner, was the letterhead of the President of the United States. It was her 95th birthday, and the President and his wife were sending their congratulations.

Mrs. Dodds looked at the emblem on the envelope and then shook her head. She was heard to say softly, “Oh dear! I wonder what I did wrong?”

Later, as she recounted the story to me, she revealed feeling she had done something bad. Why else would someone, “so important … take the time to write to me?”

I wonder, do we sometimes think the same about God? Surely Someone very important, only has time for us when we fail or sin?

But we need to remember, the Lord has time for us, not only when we need correction, but when we’re rejoicing too. Even when we are just the “everyday us.”

Prayer: Lord? Thank You for loving me every day.
