"He has told you, O mortal, what is good, and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God?" — Micah 6:8 NRSVUE

Many years ago, the question, “What would Jesus do?” became a teaching tool for moral behavior. Then, we did what we do so well in America, we commercialized it. WWJD was on T-shirts, Bible bags, bracelets, and a host of other products.

Then it went from commercial to silly, when some “theologians” attempted a commercial campaign with the phrase, “What car would Jesus drive?” That campaign never found any traction, nor, do I imagine, the book entitled, “What food would Jesus eat?” Sigh.

My friend Chris reminded me of a true story that brings us back to the original question of values. A man found a large sum of money. Thousands of dollars. He turned it into the police. This was so amazing to some that a film crew was dispatched to interview him.

Why is it that you returned the money?

Because it wasn’t mine.

But most people would have kept it. What caused you to turn it in?

With a look clearly showing the question made no sense to him, he repeated,

Because it wasn’t mine.

I didn’t take it because it wasn’t mine.

I didn’t repeat it because it wasn’t true.

I didn’t shift the blame because I am responsible for my actions.

Our problem is rarely that we don’t know what Jesus would do.

Our problem is that we are often uncomfortable with what Jesus truly wants us to do.

Prayer: Boss? Forgive me when I try to negotiate with You. I know You know best.

Open my eyes this week to what You would have me do.
