Daily Digit: Don't leave your kids unattended in cars

Sam Matthews

Daily Digit is the story behind the numbers that make our world work. Today we’re looking at the dangers of leaving kids unattended in cars. Each year, an average of 37 children die from vehicular heatstroke — that’s one every 9 days. As a result, 19 states have made it a crime to leave young children locked in motor vehicles. Data shows 88% of vehicular heatstroke victims are age 3 or younger, with infants 1 year old or younger accounting for 54% of all fatalities. However, only 13% of incidents involved children knowingly left in vehicles. So, if you’re traveling with a youngster, it’s important to remember to look before you lock.
