Daily News reporters, photographers collect 14 journalism awards at NENPA banquet

The MetroWest Daily News and Milford Daily News received 14 awards at last month's 2021 Better Newspaper Competition banquet, sponsored by the New England Newspaper and Press Association.

The event took place at the Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel in the city's Seaport neighborhood.

The Daily News took home five first-place honors, including three by photographer Ken McGagh in the Personality Photo, Sports Feature Photo and Photo Series categories.

Fellow photographer Art Illman took first place in the General News Photo category.

A story about the aftermath of a Hopkinton teen's death, written by regional reporter Hadley Barndollar and Daily News reporter Zane Razzaq, took first place in the Racial, Ethnic or Gender Issues category.

Second-place winners included senior sports journalist Ethan Winter (two for Racial, Ethnic or Gender Issues) and McGagh (one each for Sports Feature Photo and Spot News Photo).

Third-place winners included Razzaq (Local Personality Profile); Lauren Young (Human Interest Feature Story); McGagh (one each for Pictorial Photo and News Feature Photo); and Cesareo Contreras (History Reporting).

Current Daily News reporter Abby Patkin took second place in Government Reporting for her work while she was with the Brookline TAB.
