Trey Barkman's 1.72 ERA and performance during Waynedale's state title run earned him one of 15 spots on the All-Daily Record first team.

The 2022 baseball season was one of the most eventful in recent years, with Waynedale winning an improbable state title to highlight months of high-level baseball across several counties.

There were many great players who played on the 15 teams in The Daily Record's coverage area, but only a select number could be considered the best of the best.

Here are the 2022 All-Daily Record baseball teams (in alphabetical order):

FIRST TEAM

Trey Barkman, Waynedale, jr.

One of Waynedale's two No. 1-caliber pitchers, Barkman operated as the Bears' ace, leading them all the way to a state championship. Barkman came through in some huge moments for the Bears, including outdueling MLB Draft prospect Jacob Miller in the state semifinals. ... First-team All-WCAL ... 69⅓ IP, 10-1, 1.72 ERA, 77 Ks, 33 BBs; .287 AVG, .377 OBP, 8 doubles, 2 triples, 20 RBIs, 26 runs, 14 walks, 13 steals

Trent Barstow.
Trent Barstow.

Trent Barstow, Norwayne, sr.

Almost every conference champion has an innings-eating ace, and Barstow was exactly that for a Norwayne team that split the WCAL title with Waynedale. Barstow shut out the Golden Bears during the Bobcats' regular season sweep of the Div. III state champions and showed his ability as a hitter as well. ... WCAL Most Valuable Player ... 47⅓ IP, 6-2, 1.33 ERA, 74 Ks, 26 BBs; .340 AVG, .438 OBP, 1 HR, 5 doubles, 18 RBIs, 13 runs, 10 walks

Wooster's Blake Bowen rips his first of two grand slams in an 18-0 win over Mansfield Senior.
Wooster's Blake Bowen rips his first of two grand slams in an 18-0 win over Mansfield Senior.

Blake Bowen, Wooster, jr.

There are great hitting seasons and then there's what Bowen did in 2022. He showed why he's committed to play baseball at Kentucky in college, putting together one of the best hitting seasons in Wayne County history for the OCC champion Generals. Bowen was one of the best players in the state, hitting for power and average like very few players. ... Div. I first-team All-Ohio, OCC Player of the Year ... .568 AVG, .670 OBP, 7 HRs, 13 doubles, 4 triples, 45 RBIs, 39 runs, 22 walks, 16 steals; 20⅓ IP, 2-0, 3.44 ERA, 23 Ks, 6 BBs

West Holmes' Noah Clark
West Holmes' Noah Clark

Noah Clark, West Holmes, sr.

Any time Clark was on the mound, West Holmes had a good chance to win. He surrendered just six earned runs all season and led the Knights all the way to the district finals after entering the playoffs as a 13-seed. Much like he was on the football field, Clark was the heart and soul of Knights baseball in 2022. ... OCC co-Pitcher of the Year ... 65⅔ IP, 7-4, 0.64 ERA, 80 Ks, 33 BBs

Logan Dichler, Norwayne, soph.

One of the best defensive catchers in the area, Dichler was also one of a handful of players to hit over .400. His two-way production at one of the game's most important positions was a huge reason Norwayne rolled to its best regular season in years. ... First-team All-WCAL ... .407 AVG, .480 OBP, 3 doubles, 26 RBIs, 13 runs, 12 walks, 2 steals

Triway's Chad Harper
Triway's Chad Harper

Chad Harper, Triway, jr.

If Harper never threw a pitch, he might have been Triway's most valuable player in 2022. But he also operated at the top of the Titans' rotation, becoming one of the area's top hitters and pitchers during a breakout junior season. ... Div. II second-team All-Ohio, first-team All-PAC-7 ... .484 AVG, .560 OBP, 1 HR, 7 doubles, 3 triples, 24 RBIs, 17 runs, 8 walks, 4 steals; 43⅔ IP, 4-4, 3.05 ERA, 37 Ks, 13 BBs

Nick Kandel, Hillsdale, jr.

The Falcons won nearly made it all the way to state and Kandel was a big reason why. Hillsdale's ace dominated most of the season on the mound and put up big numbers as a hitter too, leading the team in RBIs and extra-base hits. ... Div. IV honorable mention All-Ohio, first-team All-WCAL ... 52⅔ IP, 8-2, 1.46 ERA, 68 Ks, 32 BBs; .390 AVG, .460 OBP, 2 HR, 7 doubles, 2 triples, 29 RBIs, 13 walks, 14 steals

Waynedale's Jay Mast
Waynedale's Jay Mast

Jay Mast, Waynedale, sr.

On a team full of consistent hitters, Mast stood out with his power to all fields, leading the area with 15 doubles. Mast was a constant in the No. 3 spot of Waynedale's lineup all year and also played excellent defense in right field. ... Div. III honorable mention All-Ohio, first-team All-WCAL ... .330 AVG, .481 OBP, 15 doubles, 1 triple, 22 RBIs, 31 runs, 23 walks

Liam McCollister, Tuslaw, jr.

Tuslaw went through a few valleys during the season, but McCollister did not. He was as good as anyone at the plate — joining Bowen as one of two players in the area with a .500 batting average and a .600 on-base percentage, while facing some high-caliber pitching in the PAC-7. ... Div. III second-team All-Ohio, first-team All-PAC-7 ... .532 AVG, .600 OBP, 4 HRs, 9 doubles, 21 RBIs, 19 runs, 12 walks, 8 steals

Waynedale's Otto Solorzano throws a first inning pitch against Milan Edison in a Division III State Championship game on Saturday, June 11, 2022 in Akron, Ohio, at Canal Park.

Otto Solorzano, Waynedale, soph.

There was no adjustment period for Solorzano after coming to Wayne County from Nicaragua. While he may not have thrown as hard as some other pitchers, Solorzano excelled at pounding the strike zone with pitches that had a lot of movement. He was the winning pitcher during the Bears' district, regional and state championship games. ... First-team All-WCAL ... 69⅔ IP, 10-1, 1.11 ERA, 104 Ks, 19 BBs

Brady Marshall, Orrville, soph.

Marshall's athleticism shined no matter the sport, and Orrville made sure to take full advantage of that during baseball season. It ended up with Marshall stealing bases at almost every opportunity, finishing with 50 while batting nearly .500 and playing plus defense. ... Div. III honorable mention All-Ohio, first-team All-PAC-7 ... .493 AVG, .583 OBP, 5 doubles, 27 RBIs, 26 runs, 15 walks, 50 steals

Jack Steiner with the put out for Dalton.
Jack Steiner with the put out for Dalton.

Jack Steiner, Dalton, jr.

If a ball was hit to shortstop, Dalton could breathe easy with Steiner manning the position. During an up-and-down season for the Bulldogs, Steiner was perhaps the best defensive infielder in the area and brought consistency at the top of the batting order.  ... First-team All-WCAL ... .366 AVG, .465 OBP, 1 triple, 11 RBIs, 15 runs, 13 walks, 5 steals

Jeff Todaro drives a single to right for one of Hiland's five hits in the 3-2 loss to Newark Catholic in the Div. IV Regional championship game at Lancaster.
Jeff Todaro drives a single to right for one of Hiland's five hits in the 3-2 loss to Newark Catholic in the Div. IV Regional championship game at Lancaster.

Jeff Todaro, Hiland, sr.

The big-hitting lefty provided plenty of pop in the middle of Hiland's order. When runners were on base, opponents didn't want to see Todaro at the plate, as he drove in a team-high 33 runs and was one of the area's biggest long-ball threats. ... Div. IV second-team All-Ohio ... .397 AVG, .483 OBP, 3 HRs, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 33 RBIs, 18 runs, 9 walks

Isaak Yoder delivers against Newark Catholic. The junior fanned five without walking a batter.
Isaak Yoder delivers against Newark Catholic. The junior fanned five without walking a batter.

Isaak Yoder, Hiland, jr.

In a long tradition of great Hiland pitchers, Yoder became the next man up, allowing just six earned runs all year while nearly leading the Hawks to state. While his strikeout numbers may not measure up to some of the area's other top hurlers, he rarely walked batters, making sure every opposing hitter had to earn their spot on base. ... 36 IP, 4-2, 1.17 ERA, 39 Ks, 6 BBs; .319 AVG, .522 OBP, 4 doubles, 15 RBIs, 18 runs, 9 walks, 12 HPB, 6 steals

Nolan Yoder, Hiland, jr.

Yoder's breakout season as a hitter and pitcher was huge for Hiland, especially as the season went along. His versatile defense and ability to get the bat on the ball helped the Hawks win another district title. ... Div. IV honorable mention All-Ohio ... .432 AVG, .516 OBP, 9 doubles, 1 triple, 23 RBIs, 35 runs, 15 walks, 8 steals; 34⅓ IP, 4-1, 3.26 ERA, 30 Ks, 6 walks
