All-Daily Record 2022: Boys Track
It was a spring to remember across all sports, as state champions were crowned on the track as well.
Led by champion throwers Colby Morlock and Dillon Morlock, Norwayne's boys captured the Division III team state championship to highlight another season to remember as a whole.
Here are the 2022 All-Daily Record boys track and field teams (in alphabetical order):
FIRST TEAM
Weston Arthur, Northwestern, sr., sprints
Regional qualifier. ... Led the area in 400 dash, thanks to personal-record time of 51.04 to win WCAL championship. ... Captured Orrville Div. II district title to earn second straight trip to Youngstown Regional, where he finished seventh. ... Also helped 4x1 and 4x4 relay teams to regional appearances and anchored 4x2 unit had second-fastest time in area.
Ashton Dunlap, Wooster., sr., distance
State qualifier. ... Placed 14th overall in 3,200 at Div. I state meet, clocking 9:30.11. ... Earned one of the state's two at-large bids for event after breaking school record at Youngstown Regional with finish of 9:23.21. ... Time shattered 47-year-old program mark and was second-fastest time in area. ... Also among area leaders in 800 (2:00.92) and 1,600 (4:26.54).
Brady Lendon, Norwayne, jr., sprints
State qualifier. ... Earned trip to Columbus in open 100 and as member of 4x2 relay. ... Injured leg in prelims for 100 at state. ... Was second in area in open 100 (11.15) and third overall in 200 (23.38). ... Played key role on 4x1 and 4x2 relays that each finished season with area's fastest time as Bobcats captured Div. III state team championship.
Colby Morlock, Norwayne, sr., throws
Div. III state champion in discus. ... Registered 185-foot mark on second attempt to capture first career state win. ... Also was state runner-up in shot put after career-best toss 64-11. ... Became No. 2 on area all-time in discus after toss of 192-5 in win at Massillon Regional. ... Won eight of nine weekend invitationals in discus, including WCAL and Norwayne District titles.
Dillon Morlock, Norwayne, so., throws
Div. III state champion in shot put. ... Recorded top mark in area history with 65-4¼ on final attempt to capture title over older brother Colby Morlock, breaking 41-year-old record. ... Added runner-up finish in discus to his first career state appearance, thanks to a toss of 177-1. ... Had personal-record mark of 185-6 in third-place finish at Massillon Regional.
Isaiah Portis, Norwayne, sr., sprints/jumps
All-Ohioan. ... Anchored 4x4 relay to fifth-place finish in season-best 1:31 to earn all-state honors. ... Finish proved key in Bobcats capturing Div. III team title. ... Also was state qualifier in long jump, placing ninth overall and missing podium by three inches. ... Had breakout season in sprints, long jump and on relays after two-year break from the sport.
Evan Rastorfer, Rittman, so., jumps
All-Ohioan. ... Personal-record mark in long jump helped underclassman to Div. III all-state finish after clearing 21-feet-1¾ on second attempt. ... Also was state qualifier in high jump, placing 15th with a 6-foot leap. ... Cleared career-best 6-4¼ earlier in season at Tusky Valley. ... Earned final qualifying spot out of regionals in both jumps. … Also ran sprints.
Cameron Soss, Triway, sr., sprints
All-Ohioan. ... Earned second straight all-state medal after sixth-place finish in 100 dash at Div. II state meet in 10.96. ... Advanced to state final after school-record run of 10.79. ... Previously broke program mark earlier in season with time of 10.90. ... Also was regional qualifier in 200, posting area's second-best time with career-best 22.55 at Youngstown Regional.
Calvin Speicher, Orrville, jr., hurdles/jumps
Regional qualifier. ... Earned trip to Youngstown Div. II Regional in four events, placing in 300 hurdles. ... Also advanced in postseason for 110 hurdles, earning spot in regional finals in the high jump and as member of 4x1 relay. ... Was lone area hurdler to break 15 seconds in 110s, clocking personal-record 14.91, and was second in 300s (41.70).
Tyler Thompson, Rittman, jr., throws
All-Ohioan. ... Earned second straight all-state honor after sixth-place finish in shot put at D-III state meet with mark of 55-11½. ... Put together impressive postseason in event by capturing wins at both Norwayne District and Massillon Regional. ... District win came thanks to personal-record mark of 63-4¾. ... Also was runner-up at WCAL Championships in event.
Jonathan Varner, Waynedale, sr., distance
All-Ohioan. ... Added another all-state medal to his collection after seventh-place showing in 3,200, crossing in school-record 9:23.09. ... Broke personal program-record time of 9:26.92 at Optimist Meet earlier in season. ... Also led area in 1,600 with 4:25.83 and was third in 800 (2:02.66). ... Swept WCAL titles in all three distance events and helped 4x8 to regional appearance.
Paul Werle, Rittman, sr., hurdles
State qualifier. ... Capped off impressive final prep season with 13th-place finish at Div. III state meet in 300 hurdles in 41.97. ... Led area in 300s with personal-record 41.19, which he ran at Massillon Regional. ... Also was regional qualifier in 110 hurdles, missing state berth by two spots, and clocked career-best 15.64 at New Philadelphia. ... Also ran on sprint relays.
