'The Daily Show' Is Being Torn Apart for This Tweet on the SCOTUS Abortion Ruling
On Monday, as many abortion rights advocates were celebrating the Supreme Court decision to strike down a Texas law that restricted access to abortion, The Daily Show, helmed by comedian Trevor Noah, weighed in with a tweet that struck many as tone-deaf.
"Celebrate the #SCOTUS ruling! Go knock someone up in Texas!" the show tweeted from its official account on Monday afternoon.
Social media users were quick to tear into the tweet — both for its misogynistic tone and trivializing of the abortion, which, despite the recent ruling, will remains an arduous and difficult process for many women.
@TheDailyShow "Go force a woman to either have an abortion or bear your child!" is a bizarre, misogynistic punchline.

@TheDailyShow I'm pro choice, but this is in poor taste.
@TheDailyShow ...so they can have an abortion. UGH! Delete this. U aren't doing #prochoice any favors w/ this "joke"pic.twitter.com/MpXrJDTBZt
@TheDailyShow Step 1: delete this tweet. Step 2: fire the intern who wrote it. Step 3: bring back Jon Stewart.
@TheDailyShow I'm vehemently pro-choice, and you are loathsome. This tweet isn't 100% pro-rape, but it is rape-flavored. Screencapping.
Not long after the unleashing, the people behind the account walked back its tweet, sort of — except not really, or not at all. Suffice it to say, they completely missed the point.
Friends, we're certainly not promoting abortions. Just excited about #SCOTUS reaffirming right to choose.
Not your finest moment, TDS.
