Daily Sports Smile: The Glazer Family donates $1 million to Hurricane Ian relief efforts

The Tampa Bay community is uniting in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian. The powerful storm ripped through Florida this week and left considerable damage in its path.

Residents are dealing with property damage, power outages and debris from a massive storm surge that dumped several inches of rainfall in the area. As local officials begin relief efforts, the Buccaneers are set to help those in need.

The Glazer Family, which owns the Buccaneers, announced plans to donate $1 million to aid the ongoing relief efforts. The funds will be distributed to different relief organizations in Southwest Florida and across the state.

The NFL Foundation also agreed to match the Glazer Family’s donation. Fans will also be able to purchase "Florida Strong" T-shirts on NFL Shop. The proceeds from T-shirt sales will go to the American Red Cross to support Hurricane Ian relief efforts.

"The destruction suffered in Southwest Florida and the damage inflicted throughout our state will be felt for some time," Buccaneers Co-Owner Darcie Glazer Kassewitz said in a statement. "It will take entire communities resiliently working together for an extended period, and our family is committed to aiding in the recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with the countless people affected, the heroic first responders and all of those helping to keep others safe."

Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady is also joining the relief efforts. The seven-time Super Bowl champion donated to the Florida Disaster Fund. The special initiative was set up to assist residents recover during times of emergency or disaster.

"I’ll be making a donation to the Florida Disaster Fund to get things started, and I’m hoping the rest of the NFL family in our state will follow suit," Brady wrote on his Twitter account.

The Buccaneers will host the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. Earlier this week, the Buccaneers evacuated to Miami for practice. They held sessions at the Baptist Health Training Complex in Miami Gardens.

The NFL also had contingency plans to move the game. On Thursday, the Buccaneers announced the game will remain as scheduled at Raymond James Stadium.

"We have informed the NFL, after consulting with local and state agencies, that we are ready to play Sunday night's game against the Kansas City Chiefs at Raymond James Stadium as originally scheduled," the Buccaneers released in a statement.

After a tough week, fans will be entertained with a Super Bowl 55 rematch. Both the Buccaneers and Chiefs are looking to rebound after tough losses in Week 3.

Kickoff is set for 8:20 p.m. ET on Sunday. The game will broadcast nationally on NBC and can be streamed via Peacock or the NBC Sports app.
