Daiso, the Japanese discount store, opens in Little Ferry, its second in NJ

LITTLE FERRY — A Japanese "dollar store" has opened its second location in New Jersey.

Daiso — which first opened in Edgewater to long lines and fanfare in 2019 — unveiled its second store last week in a shopping center on Bergen Turnpike.

The chain of "100 yen shops," as they are known in Japan, launched in 1977 and has 3,620 locations in Japan and more than 2,200 stores worldwide. Daiso opened its first store in the United States in 2005 and now has over 75 locations.

The name is a Japanese portmanteau word that means, roughly, "big making." "Dai" is big, and "so" is making or creating.

The new store in Little Ferry is in a strip mall anchored by an H Mart Asian grocery store, a liquor store and a pharmacy. There's also a Dunkin' with a drive-thru. Daiso's store in Edgewater is located in the Mitsuwa Marketplace on River Road.

"We pride ourselves on the quality, variety, and uniqueness of our wide-ranging product line, which includes everything from stationery, kitchen, cosmetics, home goods and many more," its website said.

The stores also carry traditional Japanese items like origami paper, calligraphy tools, obento products, sensu fans and sushi makers.
