Dakota Fanning’s The Bell Jar will now be a TV show, as Kirsten Dunst exits
Dakota Fanning’s The Bell Jar adaptation will now be a TV series, as Kirsten Dunst has left the project.
Announced back in 2017 and based on the only novel written by American author Sylvia Plath, the film was set to be directed by Dunst in her feature film debut, with Fanning taking on the role of depressive protagonist Esther Greenwood.
But, speaking recently, Kirsten has confirmed she will no longer direct the project.
"I never owned [the rights], so it went away for me," she told Entertainment Weekly. "That’s not in my hands anymore."

Nonetheless, there is hope Plath fans will see the project on screen soon.
Also learned by EW, it's thought Dakota Fanning is still attached to The Bell Jar, which is now being developed as a limited television series by Showtime instead.
The Bell Jar follows the life of aspiring writer Esther Greenwood, who falls into a depression during a summer internship in New York City.

Thought to be a semi-autobiographic novel on Plath's part, it was previously adapted into a 1979 film starring Julie Harris and Marilyn Hassett.
Dakota has recently starred in projects including Once Upon A Time in Hollywood and The Alienist, and Dunst gave birth to her first child last year and can next be seen in On Becoming a God in Central Florida.
