Dakota State names first dean for Governor's Cyber Academy launching in 2023
Fenecia Homan has been named the first dean of the Governor's Cyber Academy at Dakota State University, which will launch in 2023.
Homan's position starts Jan. 5, and the academy will roll out statewide by fall 2023. Homan has experience in K-12 as a middle and high school math teacher, and has been with Southeast Technical College since 2012, most recently serving as Associate Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness.
The Academy is a dual-credit program in which South Dakota high school students can take 30 credits while in high school. It's part of the cyber-research initiative that DSU announced earlier this year, and it's an expansion of the DSU Cyber Academy it has begun offering in several school districts over the past few years.
Several Academy courses will be in general education, but most will be focused on computer and cyber sciences, allowing students to explore the cyber field as a possible career and speeding up their path to a college degree.
“We are thrilled that Dr. Homan has accepted our offer to join DSU as the inaugural dean of the Governor’s Cyber Academy,” said Rebecca Hoey, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, in a news release. "The Governor’s Cyber Academy is an innovative program that will create meaningful pathways for high school students to explore education and career possibilities in cyber fields. I am honored and excited to extend the high-quality cyber programming at Dakota State to high school students across South Dakota.”
