Dakota Wesleyan volleyball wins home opener with balanced effort

Sep. 10—MITCHELL — The Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team was playing at the Christen Family Athletic Center Friday for the first time this season and the No. 17-ranked Tigers looked right at home in a 3-1 win over Great Plains Athletic Conference foe Briar Cliff.

Set scores were 25-17, 25-27, 25-10 and 25-13.

Reigning All-American Ady Dwight had a season-high 24 kills and three blocks for the Tigers. Abby Brunsing had 14 kills and Mackenzie Miller added 10 kills for the Tigers, who hit .209 as a team and had a 58-32 edge in kills against the Chargers.

DWU's Madeline Else had 50 set assists and three of the Tigers' seven service aces. Five players were in double-figures for digs, led by Mariah Gloe's 21, with 20 from Hanna Reiff, 15 from Tya Weideman and 10 each from Else and Callie Slagter.

Briar Cliff (4-5, 0-2 GPAC), which had 27 hitting errors, was led by nine kills from Alexis Johnson.

DWU (8-2, 1-1 GPAC) will host Northwestern at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14 in Mitchell.
