Dakota Wesleyan women's basketball drops ranked road tilt against Dordt

Dec. 10—SIOUX CENTER, Iowa. — A strong fourth quarter from Dordt proved to be the difference for the Dakota Wesleyan women's basketball team on Saturday.

In a battle of ranked teams, No. 5 Dordt outscored No. 11 Dakota Wesleyan 19-12 in the fourth quarter to beat the Tigers 75-65.

The Defenders opened up the final frame on a 12-2 run to mount a 13-point lead before DWU brought it back to within five with 1:25 left in the game. But Dordt closed the game out on a 5-0 run to take home the win.

Morgan Edelman provided a spark off the bench for the Tigers, pouring in a team-high 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting. She contributed six of DWU's 12 fourth-quarter points and played all 10 minutes of the final frame.

DWU committed 10 turnovers to Dordt's 13 and won the points-in-the-paint battle 32-20, but the Defenders outrebounded the Tigers 37-27. Dordt also cashed in on 45.8% of its 3-point tries, connecting on 11 of its 24 shots from range, while DWU shot 4-for-12 from deep.

Matti Reiner (15), Isabel Ihnen (14) and Jada Campbell (13) all hit double figures for the Tigers, who shot 43.3% from the field as a team. Campbell added a game-high nine rebounds, while Reiner led the team with four assists.

Bailey Beckman paced all scorers, contributing 23 points for the Defenders while shooting 4-of-9 from 3-point land. Beckman erupted in the first quarter, collecting 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting, including 3-of-4 from deep. Macy Sievers and Janie Schoonhoven each had 12 for Dordt, and Faith Van Holland tacked on 10. Sievers also had eight rebounds and eight assists off the bench.

DWU (7-3, 4-3 GPAC) will take on Northwestern on the road on Thursday, Dec. 15 for its next contest, while Dordt (12-0, 7-0 GPAC) will take on Mount Marty on the road on Dec. 15.
