Dal Segno Music Camp students to present free outdoor concert Friday at Myra Museum
Aug. 11—GRAND FORKS — Closing out a week of rehearsal and activities, students enrolled in the Dal Segno Music Camp will present a free outdoor concert at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 12, at the Campbell House on the grounds of the Grand Forks County Historical Society.
The 30 string, wind and harp musicians are from more than a dozen schools and area communities, said Naomi Welsh, Northern Valley Youth Orchestra executive director.
Their performance will feature a variety of music learned during the camp week, including classical and folk chamber music, along with a variety of light chamber orchestra works from musical, movies and symphonic pop repertoire.
Guests are invited to bring a chair or blanket, "support the young musicians and enjoy the music in the historical museum outdoor setting," Welsh said.
Students in the program this year attend schools in Grand Forks, Grand Forks Air Force Base, Reynolds and Northwood, North Dakota, and Alvarado, Crookston and Nielsville, Minnesota.
The Dal Segno Music Camp is a program of the Northern Valley Youth Orchestras organization.
The Crookston Community Theatre will present the play "Love Letters" at 7:30 p.m. nightly from Thursday to Sunday, Aug. 11-14, at the Golden Link Senior Center, 324 N. Main St.
The play, written by A.R. Gurney and directed by Dennis Jacobs, follows a decades-long friendship through letters. Two characters tell the story and each performance will have a different cast. Performers, by date, are: Thursday — Gaye Wick and Rob Conwell; Friday — Beth Carlson and Dennis Jacobs; Saturday — Phyllis Hagen and Dennis Jacobs; and Sunday — Mary Dahl and Mike Flipse.
This is the first time the theater company has presented performances at the Golden Link Senior Center.
Tickets are $12 per person.

The St. Hilarie (Minnesota) Lions Club will host its 7th Annual Redneck Round-A-Bout Island Park Baja Race beginning at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13. Pits close at 1:30 p.m.
Gates open at 9 a.m.
Admission is $10 for adults and $6 for children ages 12 and younger. A pit pass, for kids ages 13 and older is $15. Admission to a tailgater area, for attendees 21 and older, is $20.
The event will also feature raffles, concessions, a beer garden in the grandstand, and fun for the whole family.
Children ages 12 and younger will have a chance to win a bike with the entry fee.

The Summer Outdoor Yoga Series continues at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, by the Flood Memorial Monument obelisk on The Greenway just south of DeMers Avenue in downtown Grand Forks.
No admission fee is charged; donations are welcomed.
Participants are invited to bring a mat, rug or towel and experience the ancient healing practice in the natural setting. The one-hour sessions are also planned for Aug. 27 and Sept. 10.
The application period to submit grants for the state's "Artists on Main Street" program runs will begin Monday, Aug. 15, and run through Sept. 23, the North Dakota Department of Commerce has announced.

The grant program, part of the state's "Main Street North Dakota Initiative," is an effort to create economic development through artist-led projects in five North Dakota communities.
Through this accelerated program, eligible entities may receive up to $5,000 per community to be used for technical support, supplies and resources to achieve community and artist outcomes of at least five projects.
