Watch: Dallas County deputy struck by vehicle on snowy Interstate 80

A deputy was struck by a vehicle while he was assisting a motorist on Interstate 80 on Saturday, according to a news release from the Dallas County Sheriff's Office.

Deputy Brandon Bjoin was speaking to a driver who got stuck at about 4:20 p.m. when an accident occured behind him, according to the release. As a result, a car entered the median where Bjoin was standing and sideswiped him.

He was hit in his right arm and was knocked to the ground. Bjoin was transported a hospital in Des Moines and was later released with bruising on his right arm.

The driver he assisted was not hit, the release said.

It was snowing at the time of the crash and several other accidents had happened along Interstate 80 at the time.

"Deputy Bjoin was extremely lucky that he did not suffer a major injury or death," Dallas County sheriff Adam Infante said in the release. "We hope this serves as a reminder to all motorists to slow down when you see flashing lights and use caution in winter driving situations."
