Dallas Cowboys finally address 'elephant in the room' after significant road struggles before game at Washington
It’s no secret that the Dallas Cowboys have struggled on the road this season.
Dallas — which has lost all three of its road games so far — hasn’t scored more than 16 points in a game away from AT&T Stadium, and is averaging just more than 270 yards per game.
Yet when they are in Dallas, it’s a whole different story. The Cowboys, fresh off a dominant 40-7 win over Jacksonville last weekend, have averaged more than 28 points per game and are putting up 363 yards of total offense per game while at home.
Quarterback Dak Prescott and running back Ezekiel Elliott have played significantly better at home this season, too. Elliott is averaging just 83 yards per game on the road, compared to 112 at home, and has scored just once. Prescott has been sacked 13 of his 19 times and thrown his four interceptions on the road, too.
So ahead of their NFC East bout with the Washington Redskins in Landover, Maryland, on Sunday, the Cowboys sat down to pinpoint what is going wrong away from home.
“We addressed the elephant in the room as an offense,” Dak Prescott told ESPN. “I think it was great. It was a great meeting. We had the whole offense in there and just talking among the coaches and players about the thing maybe we need to do better on the road, just communication.
“I know we’ll take a lot from that conversation and our communication will be better.”
Sunday’s game will have significant implications in the NFC East race, too. The Redskins, Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles are all in a tight battle for the top spot in the division, and the winner of Sunday’s contest will earn a valuable head-to-head win that could decide a tiebreaker come playoff time.
If they are going to string together two wins for the first time all year, and finally pick up a road win, offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said there is a simple solution.
“We just have to handle our business better,” Linehan told ESPN. “On the road, we’ve been in the past, until this season, so good on the road. We’ve talked about a lot of the things that have to be shored up that weren’t there in the previous three road games and hopefully we can be better.”
