Dec. 15—Robert Hill, founder and president of Dalton's Greater Works, said no child should go without a present on Christmas.

"But we know that some parents are unwilling or unable to give their child a present," he said.

That's why for the past 12 years Dalton's Greater Works has hosted a free toy "store" for children in need.

"It will take place this Saturday starting at 9 a.m.," Hill said. "It's first-come, first-served. We ask that only the parents come, not the children. The parents will make the selection. We will ask them to show a photo ID. They can get up to three toys each. The toys will be wrapped, and the child's name will be put on it."

Dalton's Greater Works is at 1001 S. Thornton Ave.

Founded in 1996, Dalton's Greater Works provides services to the homeless and indigent in the community, including through a food pantry and a clothing "store" where those in need can get clothing.

Last year, the toy store served 375 families with just a little over 600 children.

"We probably will have more this year," Hill said. "We've had a lot of inquiries. We do ask that only custodial parents come. We know there are a lot of grandparents who would like to get presents for their grandchildren. But that isn't who this is aimed at, and we only have so many presents."
