Damaged sewage pipe in south Charlotte causes near 4,400 gallon overflow, officials say
Crews responded to a wastewater overflow in south Charlotte that caused an estimate 4,440 gallons of sewage to reach the Four Mile Creek, officials said.
The overflow happened on Saturday in the 4700 block of Andrews Links Street, according to a release from Charlotte Water.
A large rock fell on a wastewater pipe near the creek and caused the overflow. Four Mile Creek is in the Catawba River Watershed.
“A majority of wastewater overflows can be prevented with your help,” Cam Coley, spokesperson at Charlotte Water said in an email.
“Anything put in plumbing or a manhole can cause wastewater overflows, spilling raw sewage into your street, your creek or even inside your own home. Even products labeled as ‘flushable’ do not breakdown in the sewer system and can contribute to clogging,” Coley said.
Ways to help
Charlotte Water urges residents to be mindful of where they are tossing their trash.
▪ Toss in the trash: paper towels, wipes, hair, cotton swabs, feminine products, dental floss, coffee grounds and excess food.
▪ Toss in the toilet: only toilet paper.
▪ Kitchen sink: soap suds, small amounts of foods from plate, and liquids (no fats, oils, or grease).
▪ Full-service recycling center: used and expired oils and grease.
