Update: Quabbin Regional School District cancels school Thursday due to power outages

Heavy winds overnight caused scattered power outages in the region, with Quabbin Regional School District calling off school Thursday.

Many homes in the district were without power early Thursday. The district covers Barre, Hardwick, Hubbardston, Oakham and New Braintree. More than 300 customers were without power in Barre as of 7 a.m., according to the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency.

The district initially called for a two-hour delay, hoping power would be restored, but later canceled school for the day because of "unknown restoration" time, according to a post on social media.

Central Mass. was hit with heavy winds overnight, as a cold front approaches that is expected to bring dramatic weather changes after three days of mild weather.

There is a chance for snow showers early Thursday morning.

The sun will come out on Thursday but the temperature will remain cold, with the high only reaching about 30 degrees with gusty winds continuing.
