Buffalo Bills Safety Damar Hamlin partnered with the American Heart Association to create a CPR awareness initiative.

The initiative comes in the wake of Hamlin’s cardiac arrest on the field during the Cincinnati Bengals versus Buffalo Bills game Monday, January 2. After being hit, Hamlin stood up and only to immediately fall again.

Buffalo Bills’ medical staff rushed to the field and performed CPR. A defibrillator was later used to restart his heart. The 24-year-old’s heart needed to be restarted twice.

A month after the incident and intensive hospitalization at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Hamlin decided to partner with the American Heart Association to challenge notable figures to learn how to perform CPR that may save someone’s life, as it did Hamlin’s.

The challenge entails three steps:

  1. Learn CPR: The American Heart Association provided a quick one-minute guide to learning CPR on their website. They also provided additional CPR resources, including registering for a CPR course that can provide a certification.

  2. Give: The challenge encourages participants to donate to the American Heart Association to “fund CPR education and training, and other lifesaving programs and scientific research,” the website wrote.

  3. Share: Finally, the challenge promotes participants to pass the initiative to three friends by tagging them through social media platforms.

During his announcement, Hamlin challenged Tom Brady, Michelle Obama, and LeBron James on Twitter.
