Dame Judi Dench has explained why she pretends and believes that she is still 56.

The Oscar winning actress, who is 88 years old, spoke about her view on age and getting older while at the Braemar Literary Festival over the weekend.

The Skyfall actress said (via Mail Online): "We've got to keep going and not think of age too much. You have to think you are about 56. Also, I don't make a point of keeping fit. I am very bad at that."

This is not the first time Dench has spoken about her age and health. Earlier this year, Dench opened up about her issues with filming due to her health after she was diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in 2012.

As a result, Dench had to give up driving due to her deteriorating eyesight. A problem that means she also struggles to learn her lines. However, she insists she wants to work "as much as [she] can."

"I mean I can’t see on a film set anymore. And I can’t see to read. So I can’t see much. But, you know, you just deal with it. Get on," Dench said.

The actress added: "It’s difficult for me if I have any length of a part. I haven’t yet found a way. Because I have so many friends who will teach me the script. But I have a photographic memory."

As well as playing M in the Bond movies, Dench has appeared in numerous pictures, including Belfast, Mrs Brown and Shakespeare in Love, which won her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1999.
