Damian Lewis has paid an emotional tribute to his late wife Helen McCrory, saying: “She’s with us.”

Peaky Blinders star McCrory died in April 2021 at the age of 52 after battling cancer.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Lewis said she was “much missed” and that she would be with him when he takes part in the Soccer Aid charity tournament at the weekend.

He told hosts Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard: “When she came to Soccer Aid the very first time and I got into my hotel room up in Manchester in The Lowry, it was covered in Union Jack bunting and England flags everywhere, which she had gone out and bought and decorated the room with.

“So she’s with us."

"She’s with us again this year," he added.

The actor – who has two children with McCrory - recently held a memorial for the actor, who played Aunt Polly Gray in the BBC gangland drama.

It was attended by the likes of Helena Bonham Carter and Keeley Hawes.

Lewis said to Garraway and Shephard: “That day we had the other day… was a special day, I’m very glad you could have been part of it.

“She was celebrated by, you know, her tribe, her profession, the acting profession – actors, directors, producers, writers – all showed up and she’s much, much missed.”

The Homeland actor said that McCrory was “a fabulous human being”.

He said that since she had died people from all walks of life had got in touch to say she’d had an impact on their lives.

Soccer Aid takes place this weekend and sees celebs including Liam Payne and Gary Neville playing football for charity.
