Incoming Dance Kaleidoscope director hopes to honor David Hochoy's work

With the coming retirement of its longest-serving artistic director, Dance Kaleidoscope's Board of Trustees announced Wednesday that it has chosen a new one. Joshua Blake Carter will relocate from Chicago to Indianapolis to start the position July 24, in time for the 2023-24 season.

Carter will take the reins as David Hochoy retires at the end of June after 32 years with the company, finishing his tenure with the season finale of "Scheherazade," which runs from Thursday through Sunday.

"I am excited about taking on this role because I believe I can honor what David has created while also driving the company forward with my artistic vision," the incoming artistic director said in a news release.

Carter, a 2009 University of Arizona graduate, has been the Giordano II director since 2013 and performed as a Giordano Dance Co. dancer from 2010 to 2017, when he was promoted to operations manager.

The new artistic director prizes storytelling and has created new works for Aerial Dance Chicago, Ballet Nouveau Colorado, DanceWorks Chicago and the Joffrey Ballet, among others, according to the release. Carter's choreography for Disney's "Newsies" at the Paramount Theatre was nominated for a Joseph Jefferson Award and Regional Broadway World Award, and he's won several other honors for his work as well.
