Dancing with the Stars' Jeannie Mai has been forced to drop out of this year's series after being hospitalised with a potentially life-threatening condition.

According to several US publications, the 41-year-old – who is best known for co-hosting talk show The Real outside of the competition – has been diagnosed with epiglottitis, an inflammatory condition that affects the airways.

"It saddens me that I will not be able to continue with the competition on DWTS," Mai told ET Canada after the show broke the news on social media. "My doctors discovered a health concern with my throat which requires immediate attention and surgery.

"I am heartbroken that my DWTS journey has to end here. The last several weeks have been an amazing learning experience. I have pushed myself to new limits physically and mentally, and I am so proud of how far we've come."

Mai went on to thank her professional partner Brandon Armstrong "for being so supportive" and believing in her during the time they trained together, as well as the fans that voted to keep her in each week.

"I wish everyone else in the competition the best of luck," she concluded.

"Jeannie has inspired us, along with millions of fans, with her energy and dedication. We wish her a full and speedy recovery." the official DWTS Twitter account stated.

"Since Jeannie had to withdraw from the competition, tonight's show will feature the eight remaining couples and a single elimination."

Dancing with the Stars airs on ABC in the US.
