'Dancing With the Stars' Fans Call to “Boycott” ABC Over the Fall Cast

From Seventeen

  • The 2019 Dancing With the Stars season 28 cast was announced on Wednesday morning's Good Morning America.

  • Now, DWTS viewers are threatening to boycott ABC and the dance show over the decision to include Former Press Secretary Sean Spicer in the cast.

  • Sean Spicer resigned from President Trump back in 2017 and repeatedly made false statements while working for the White House.

Good Morning America revealed the 2019 Dancing With the Stars cast just a few hours ago, and already there's major controversy brewing.

When GMA announced the season 28 dancers, many DWTS viewers were shocked to find out that Former Press Secretary Sean Spicer had been chosen to compete. Sean resigned from President Trump back in 2017 and was replaced with Sarah Huckabee Sanders. While working for the White House, he notoriously sparred with reporters and made repeated false claims to the American public.

Now, Sean's controversial background has fans vowing to boycott season 28 of the popular dance show and its network ABC. The hashtag #BoycottDWTS has noticeably picked up steam on Twitter since GMA made the announcement.

  • "It’s disgusting that Dancing With the Stars has cast Sean Spicer. The man lied to our country repeatedly and debased our government — all while promoting an agenda of hate. Don’t watch." - @KaivanShroff

  • "Sean Spicer @seanspicer should not have a job... Period! Especially on @ABC, dancing. He lied straight to the American people. Shame!!!Shame on @Disney ** (Parent Company)BOYCOTT DISNEY & #DWTS" - @CasetPregnent1

  • "Bad choice, @DancingABC. He lied to the American people as Press Secretary. He dodged questions. How is it okay for you to choose this deceitful man to compete for the mirror ball trophy? #BoycottDWTS" - @MrEricZhang

  • "Professional liar to the American people, Sean Spicer, is legitimized by ABC.#boycottDWTS" - @cktailgrl

This outrage comes after Dancing With the Stars had a controversial ending in season 27, when country music radio host Bobby Bones and his partner Sharna Burgess were crowned the champions thanks to the show's voting system that gave equal weight to viewer votes and the judges' scores. Back then, fans lamented that the show became nothing more than a popularity contest and didn't award skill. ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke told Deadline that the show was planning to tweak the format, perhaps to address the backlash.

Now, however, ABC's hit dance show appears to be facing a bigger bout of backlash. The network and show have not yet publicly addressed the controversy. GoodHousekeeping.com has reached out for comment and will update this post if the show's reps release a statement on the matter.

Apart from Sean, 12 other contestants will be competing for the mirrorball trophy this year:

  • Hannah Brown, Bachelor and Bachelorette alum

  • Lauren Alaina, singer and songwriter

  • James Van Der Beek, Dawson's Creek and Pose actor

  • Ray Lewis, former Baltimore Ravens linebacker

  • Kate Flannery, a.k.a. Meredith from The Office

  • Ally Brooke, former singer of the girl group Fifth Harmony

  • Lamar Odom, NBA star

  • Kel Mitchell, actor and comedian

  • Christie Brinkley, model

  • Mary Wilson, "The Supremes" singer

  • Karamo Brown, Netflix Queer Eye star

Judges Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli, and Carrie Ann Inaba are also set to return.
