Danny Boyle Is Working On A Prequel TV Series To 'The Beach'
Time-hopping and what-iffing are a bit of a theme in Danny Boyle's films, and rarely more so than in the Beatles-free world of his new one Yesterday. However, while doing the promo rounds for that, Boyle mentioned that his 2000 film The Beach, which starred Leo DiCaprio as well as All Saints' best single, is being revived for a time-bending TV prequel series.
It's being put together by actor, writer and director Amy Seimetz, who's turned up in Pet Sematary, Lean On Pete and Stranger Things, as well as directing episodes of Atlanta and exec producing, writing and directing on The Girlfriend Experience.
"The Beach may come back," Boyle told The Independent. "[Seimetz] has taken The Beach and made a prequel for television. It’s the same character but it’s set now, so 20 years later – it’s a bit of a headf**k."
Right. So it's a prequel, but set now, but with the character Leo DiCaprio played still in the main role? OK. Alright.
"It’s intriguing when you see it," Boyle went on. "I’ve read the first two scripts. I don’t know if they’ll have the courage to do it at FX, but you never know."
On top of that, Boyle mentioned that he's involved in a "properly good" third film in the 28 [unit of time]s Later zombie series to follow 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later along with original writer Alex Garland. You've probably got to know Garland a bit better since then with his work on Ex Machina and Annihilation.
"Alex Garland and I have a wonderful idea for the third part," Boyle said. "It's properly good.
"The original film led to a bit of a resurgence in the zombie drama and it doesn't reference any of that. It doesn't feel stale at all."
It might be some way down the line, though. "[Garland] is concentrating on directing his own work at the moment, so it's stood in abeyance really, but it's a you-never-know." How many directors would happily use the word 'abeyance' in an interview? It's basically just Danny Boyle and Ken Russell isn't it.
