Danny O'Donoghue has revealed he struggled to match the drinking prowess of Sir Tom Jones on a night out with the music legend, finding himself in hospital the next day.

"You think Liam Gallagher is a hellraiser? Spend the night drinking with Tom Jones. He’s a drinking pro," the frontman of The Script told the Mirror.

O'Donoghue made the comments ahead of this weekend's Isle of Wight Festival, in which both O'Donoghue and 81-year-old icon Jones are set to take to the stage.

He revealed that, during one night several years ago, the two judges on The Voice spent a night drinking champagne together, with Jones ordering another bottle every time the previous one was half emptied.

O'Donoghue added: “We drank champagne until 7am, then I had to get up early and drank a lot of coffee. I was hospitalised next day because I ended up getting heart palpitations.

“I’m not blaming Tom. I blame my ability to not say no. The rest of my band want to party this weekend. I may have to take it easy.”

Jones has a reputation as a party animal, even as he enters his ninth decade, and has previously described himself as a "nocturnal creature" who seldom wakes before midday.

In 2017, council officials reportedly had to shut down a boozy late night party he attended with Guns n Roses rocker Axl Rose in London.

Jones and O'Donoghue met when they were both on the original panel of coaches for the talent show The Voice in 2012.

O'Donoghue left the show after two series, while Jones has appeared on nine of the 10 series which have aired to date — only sitting out the 2016 run.

Jones released his 41st studio album, Surrounded by Time, earlier this year, featuring covers of songs including Bob Dylan's One More Cup of Coffee and The Windmills of Your Mind, from 1968 movie The Thomas Crown Affair.

The album cemented Jones as the oldest man ever to top the UK Albums Chart.

O'Donoghue also has a busy 12 months ahead of him, with The Script releasing greatest hits compilation album Tales From The Script next month and planning a globe-trotting tour in 2022.
