STORY: One of the world's top dairy producers has vowed to cut its methane emissions by 30%.

Danone said Tuesday (January 17) it would make the reduction by 2030.

And it would do so by working with farmers, other companies and governments.

Methane is a key threat to the global climate.

Danone says agriculture and livestock activities make up 40% of global emissions of the gas.

While dairy production from cattle makes up around 8% of total human-caused output.

Two years ago more than 100 countries pledged to cut methane discharges by 30% by 2030.

But few have shown clear plans to reach that goal.

Danone works directly with 58,000 dairy farmers across 20 countries.

It expects to remove 1.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide-equivalent of methane emissions by the start of the next decade.

Danone said it will launch four new initiatives this year to work on the project in Africa, Europe and the U.S.

it will also partner with leading government organisations and non-governmental groups.
