Darnell Dozier picks up 700th career victory as Princess Anne’s girls basketball coach

The big numbers keep piling up for Princess Anne High girls basketball coach Darnell Dozier.

Dozier reached another milestone — 700 career victories — when the Cavaliers defeated Landstown 42-35 Friday night in Virginia Beach. Princess Anne (14-1), ranked fifth in Hampton Roads, stayed unbeaten in the Beach District as Tinasia Spencer scored 19 points.

Dozier, in his 28th season, has piled up a list of impressive numbers:

  • 12 state championships.

  • Eight consecutive state titles from 2014-21.

  • 15 state championship game appearances.

  • 13 consecutive state championship game trips before last season.

All of those are Virginia High School League records, and his 31 wins during the 2008-09 season are tied atop the VHSL list for a single-single total.

Dozier, already a member of the VHSL Hall of Fame, is one of five public-school girls basketball coaches in the state with 700 or more career wins.

Wise Central coach Robin Dotson won his 702nd career game earlier this week, while West Springfield’s Bill Gibson and Oakton’s Fred Priester started this season with 812 and 761 victories, respectively. Alan Cantrell won 749 at Whitewood, Tazewell and Floyd County from 1979-2017.

Dozier is the only among those five with all of his wins at the same school.
