Hollywood's biggest night had a double-dose of SouthCoast flavor on Sunday night, as Dartmouth resident Jenny Slate appeared at the 95th Academy Awards with two nominated films.

Slate, who lives in Dartmouth with husband Ben Shattuck, was there mainly for "Marcel The Shell With Shoes On," one of five nominees for Best Animated Feature. The movie, which was released last June, is a feature adaptation of the popular stop-motion shorts and best-selling books Slate wrote with Dean Fleischer Camp, who also directed and plays a major role.

Slate produced the film, co-wrote the story and lent her distinct voice to Marcel, a fearless, 1-inch-tall gastropod with googly eyes and orange sneakers. A mix of live action and stop motion animation, "Marcel" has tallied $6.8 million at the box office and has a 98% “fresh score” on the film review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

It faced tough competition in the animated category, losing to “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” which also won the Golden Globe, Critics Choice, Annie Award, BAFTA and more. Also up for best animated feature were “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” “The Sea Beast,” and “Turning Red.”

Last month, Slate won a prestigious Annie Award for best voice acting in an animated film, but “Marcel” is her first Oscar nomination. "Marcel" also earned nominations from all the major outfits on the circuit: BAFTA, Golden Globes, Independent Spirit and a bunch of film festivals and guild groups. It took top honors from the New York Film Critics Circle and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. (If you still haven't seen it, "Marcel" is available to stream via video on demand rental.)

Slate has role in Best Picture 'Everything Everywhere All at Once'

Though she's credited as just “Big Nose,” which was later changed to “Debbie the Dog Mom,” Slate appears in pivotal parts of “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” the mind-bending martial arts multiverse comedy that nabbed seven Academy Awards.

Slate, a Milton native, gets to show off her comedic chops and kung fu skills in the indie hit.  She first shows up as a patron at Michelle Yeoh’s laundromat. Later, the two actresses square off with Slate’s character using her Pomeranian as a weapon.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” nearly swept the Oscars, with statues going to Yeoh for Best Actress and Jamie Lee Curtis for Best Supporting Actress. Ke Huy Quan, the former child star who played Short Round in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” won a Best Supporting Actor award, with an emotional speech that quickly went viral where the Vietnamese former refugee declared, "This is the American dream."

"Everything Everywhere" also took home best original screenplay, best editing, best director for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Schienert, and was named Best Picture.

The 95th Academy Awards ceremony were held Sunday at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and aired on ABC. Jimmy Kimmel hosted.
