Data privacy company shares how common belief about spam calls is wrong

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Some of the most common advice to avoid spam calls could be wrong, according to new research.

Incogni, a data privacy company, shared research contradicting the belief that spam calls can be identified by area code. In a press release, the company noted that there was no evidence that specific area codes were tied to spam calls. Instead, the research points out that most spam calls originate locally.

Aside from toll-free numbers starting with 833, 888, 855, 800, 866, and 844, research indicates that the top 10 most frequently reported area codes vary depending on the state. Specifically, Incogni reported that the most common area codes for spam originate in the same state the recipient lives.

The top 10 reported spam call area codes in Alabama, according to Ingogni’s research:

  • Area code 256 (Alabama)

  • Area code 334 (Alabama)

  • Area code 251 (Alabama)

  • Area code 659 (Alabama)

  • Area code 938 (Alabama)

  • Area code 855 (Toll-Free)

  • Area code 833 (Toll-Free)

  • Area code 888 (Toll-Free)

  • Area code 470 (Georgia)
