Data scientist: COVID-19 is leading cause of death in San Joaquin County

A data scientist wanted to see just how dangerous the coronavirus has been in San Joaquin County. Chuck Davis, Chief Technology Officer at Bayesiant, sorted through more than 50,000 death records in the county over the past seven years. “What we found is that COVID is the singular leading cause of death in 2020. And understand that for the first few months of 2020, there weren't any reported, or attributable COVID deaths. So that’s even more frightening in many respects,” he said. “When people make the comparison that COVID is like the flu, no it’s not. It’s way worse than the flu. In fact, to be exact, it’s 58.3 times more deadly than the flu in San Joaquin County,” Davis said. Davis says the data isn’t intended to scare people, rather show them how serious the virus is. As of Friday, San Joaquin County reported 534 people have died from COVID-19.
