People wanting to discuss the proposed Shasta County Corrections and Rehabilitation Campus can attend a workshop about the facility that is being held next week.

The Shasta County Board of Supervisors has approved plans for a jail expansion and construction of a new campus. This workshop will focus on the possibilities being discussed and what are the key considerations when designing a detention facility. Attendees will be invited to share their ideas and provide input.

The workshop is being held on Dec. 13 at the Redding Library Community Room, 1100 Parkview Ave. from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

People can register to attend at https://www.shastacountyworkshop.com.

In May, supervisors voted unanimously to allocate $25 million of the $35 million from the American Recovery Plan Act money the county is receiving toward the construction of a jail. County officials were told that it would cost $100 million to $125 million for a new jail and rehabilitation center.

Shasta County has contracted with Nichols Melburg & Rossetto Architects to do preliminary design work on a new jail and rehabilitation center.

Nichols Melburg & Rossetto will draw up designs for expanding the current jail site at West Street or create a new jail at a yet-to-be-determined site, Minturn said.

If the public workshop draws more than 48 attendees, an additional workshop will be scheduled for a later date, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office said.
