These are the dates Johnson City Schools will make up last week’s snow days

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Johnson City Schools (JCS) will use three built-in snow days to make up for the days school was canceled due to last week’s winter storm.

A spokesperson for the school system confirmed that students will be in class on Feb. 2, Feb. 19, and April 1.

While that means Johnson City Schools will have exhausted its built-in snow days for the 2023-2024 school year, the school system still has over a dozen “stockpiled” days. That is because nearly 18 years ago JCS extended the length of the school day by 30 minutes, which created 13 stockpiled days.

According to the school system, the original reason for extending the school day was to improve learning, not to stockpile built-in snow days.

“District leaders believed this additional time represented one of the best strategies to improve student achievement,” JCS Director of Communications Collin Brooks said. “The additional time has been invaluable for tutoring programs (RTI) imbedded in the school day as well. We also explored several other ideas to extend learning opportunities for students such as before/after school tutoring, Saturday school, and summer programming. These strategies are critical elements for student academic improvement and support the culture of excellence expected in Johnson City Schools.”

Johnson City Schools were closed last week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. Schools opened under a two-hour delay Thursday.
