Dave Chappelle and “Saturday Night Live” got binged.
In YouTube’s list of top-trending videos of 2020, the standup comedian and the long-running variety series claimed the two top spots.
A wild year marked by the presidential election, social unrest and the COVID-19 outbreak, the top videos touched upon these subjects.
The No. 1 video of 2020 is Dave Chappelle’s “8:46,” a 27-minute standup special filmed in Yellow Springs, Ohio.
Netflix dropped the comic’s standup routine on June 12, less than three weeks after the death of George Floyd in police custody.
The title references the amount of time disgraced Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck.
Slotting at No. 2 is the cold opening of the premiere episode of the 46th season of “Saturday Night Live.”
Featuring Jim Carrey as former vice president Joe Biden and Alec Baldwin reprising his role as Donald Trump, the skit parodied the two politicians’ first presidential debate prior to Trump’s COVID-19 infection admission.
One of the segment’s most notable jokes was Carrey’s prescient riff on coronavirus.
“Just imagine (if) science and karma could somehow team up to send us all a message about how dangerous this virus could be. I’m not saying I want it to happen, but just imagine if it did.”
Also making the top 10 cutoff were Ricky Gervais’ opening monologue at the Golden Globes. The British funnyman, hosting for the fifth time, cracked jokes regarding Joe Pesci, Jeffrey Epstein and one particular scandal-riddled actress who recently had been released from prison.
“I came here in a limo tonight and the license plate was made by Felicity Huffman,” snarked Gervais.
A tear-filled breakup video by makeup artist Jeffree Star; “Quarantine Stereotypes,” a 10-minute spoof on American life amid coronavirus; and the first episode of the John Krasinski internet series “Some Good News” also landed in the top 10.
The most-watched music video of 2020, according to YouTube, is the Future song “Life Is Good,” featuring Drake. So far this year, it has drawn a staggering 1.3 billion views.
