Dave's Fast Mart in Dighton has a new owner and a 'small town atmosphere'

DIGHTON — The new owner of Dave's Fast Mart in Dighton said he's always wanted to own his own store and he was finally able to make that dream come true.

"I'm really excited to get going here," said Dave Cordeiro, the "Dave" in Dave's Fast Mart, who purchased the Somerset Avenue convenience store previously known as Fast Mart in November.

When he was in his 20s, he worked in Fall River at Ray's Package Store, which is now called Joe's Liquors, he said.

"I did not buy that store because my wife and I had two babies. We had just bought a house. I was scared to take on the burden of a store mortgage. The opportunity rose 20 years later to purchase Fast Mart, and I was able to do it," Cordeiro said.

Cordeiro, who manages the store with his wife Eulalia Cordeiro, said it's "a family-orientated business."

Dave's Fast Mart is a "one-stop shop" that offers everything from groceries like eggs, milk and butter, to lottery tickets and tobacco products, said Dave Cordeiro, who said he purchased the store for $190,000.

Dave's now has a beer and wine license

Customers can now also purchase beer and wine at Dave's since Dighton selectmen approved his request for a liquor license on Feb. 9, Cordeiro said.

Cordeiro said most of the customers who frequent his store, which is next door to Dunkin' Donuts and Dighton House of Pizza on Route 138, are from Dighton and "surrounding cities and towns."

Eulalia Cordeiro said she and her husband have greeted customers from Fall River, Somerset and Rhode Island.

"Everything here has been going so good," she said.

'A small-town atmosphere'

Dave Cordeiro, who worked as a project manager at Horner Millwork in Somerset before purchasing the store, said a lot of his customers "are return customers."

"I get a lot of customers from Taunton because it's so close," he said. "The Dighton-Taunton town line is 500 feet from the store."

Dighton resident Gary Humann, 59, said he frequents Dave's Fast Mart most days of the week.

"It's a convenient store for me to go to," he said.

Humann said he, his wife Michelle and their son Justin, 32, visit Dave's Fast Mart regularly "to pick up what we need."

"I have a nasty habit of smoking, and they have all of my cigarette brands there," he said. "If I run out of milk, I can get it at the store."

Humann said the Cordeiros greet customers "like they have known them for years."

"Every time I come to Dave's, he and his wife are warm and friendly," Humann said.

"He greets everybody that comes in through the door and asks them, 'How are you doing?'"

"It's like a small-town atmosphere in the store where everybody knows everybody," Humann said.

Eulalia Cordeiro said customers have given her and Dave a warm welcome since they bought the store.

"Everybody is so nice and friendly," she said.

Eulalia Cordeiro said her husband has always wanted to own and manage a store.

"It's been his dream for a while," she said.

Dave Cordeiro said he enjoys greeting customers, new and old. No two days are the same.

"You always have new people come in with different backgrounds. That makes the day go by," Dave Cordeiro said.
