Everyone's favourite environmentalist national treasure is due to return to the BBC next year, with what will undoubtedly be a glorious treat for all of the senses.

Yes, it has been confirmed that Sir David Attenborough will be back on our screens with a new BBC series named Extinction: The Facts.

Centred around endangered species and the fast-looming extinction crisis that so many animals have fallen victim to, the new series will focus on what this will mean for humanity and the wider planet.

It will look at the interconnectedness of plant and animal species across the globe, as well as how the likely extinction of certain creatures will affect the livelihoods of others, sometimes unexpectedly.

And who better than Sir David himself to spearhead the campaign to help endangered animals?

"Even today a record number of wildfires are burning in the Amazon and a million species are threatened with extinction," Alison Kirkham, a BBC representative, said.

"We know our audience has a hunger to understand how these urgent environmental issues affect them, but more than that, what they themselves can do in their homes.

"This is television that matters. And I’m thrilled Sir David Attenborough continues to work with us to make it."

We're hoping for this hour-long gift to feature as many beautiful panoramic nature shots – and cute insights into the lives of wild animals – as possible.

Over five million viewers watched the launch episode of BBC One's Blue Planet Live earlier this year – so get your schedule in order so you don't miss out on Attenborough's latest environmental venture!

Extinction: The Facts will be available to watch on the BBC in 2020.
