David Bossie: 'The president is going to win Arizona'

David Bossie, president of Citizens United and former deputy campaign manager for Donald Trump in 2016, joins Yahoo News Editor in Chief Daniel Klaidman and Chief Investigative Correspondent Michael Isikoff to discuss how 2020 may play out differently than 2016 in key battleground states.

Video Transcript

MICHAEL ISIKOFF: Are there any states you didn't carry in 2016 you think you can carry this time?

DAVID BOSSIE: I do, I do. I think there are three. I think Nevada is definitely in play. Minnesota is 100% winnable, and New Hampshire. I think all three of those states, the president can and probably will win. And so those are-- and if you want to get into the reasons behind it, we can. But those three states, to answer your question, are incredibly gettable.

Those are states that we didn't win. We came close. We lost by about 30,000 or 35,000 votes statewide in Nevada. We lost in Minnesota just very closely. And then we lost by about 2,700 votes in New Hampshire.

So all three of those were gettable in '16, but we just came up short. And I think we're in a good place now.

DANIEL KLAIDMAN: Which are the battlegrounds do you think are right now closest? I mean, what do you think about, say, Arizona?

DAVID BOSSIE: The ones that we won? You're saying the ones that we won last time that are battlegrounds?

DANIEL KLAIDMAN: Yeah, like Arizona.

DAVID BOSSIE: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Arizona is-- it's a really interesting question. Arizona has historically over the last many presidential cycles have been-- has trended away from Republicans. Even though we're winning it, it's been getting closer and closer.

And I think-- and we won it. We won it in 2016 pretty easily. We have a tough senate race there this year, which is not helping the president's campaign, in essence.

Some states where we have a great senate candidate in a great race, it helps us. Sometimes the president helps that candidate. In Arizona, that race, that senate race is a tough one, and not looking particularly great at the moment. But that can change.

But the president's going to win Arizona. And I think that we're going to do very well there. And I think New Mexico is actually interesting as well, right next door.
