David’s Bridal to cut 227 jobs in NJ this summer after filing for bankruptcy in April

David’s Bridal is laying off 227 New Jersey workers this August, according to regulatory filings, and will auction off seven of its New Jersey locations before that. The formal wear chain filed for bankruptcy protection in April.

The layoffs will go into effect throughout August, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, or WARN Act notice, filed with the state Labor Department in April.

In April, the wedding retailer announced that it would lay off more than 9,200 employees across the nation. Straddled with debt, the Pennsylvania-based chain also filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2018, but emerged from bankruptcy the next year. Since then, the company has modernized its business, David's Bridal CEO James Marcum said in a statement.

Kelly Cook, chief marketing officer for David’s Bridal, said in an email on Tuesday that they're seeking to "preserve as many David's jobs as possible" while they look for a buyer, "but have commenced store closings."

“Of course, no outcome is certain, but we want to assure the market and our employees that we are working as hard as we can to find a buyer to bring the iconic David’s brand into the future.”

The layoffs come as David’s Bridal, through A&G Real Estate Partners, said it plans to sell and auction off nearly 300 leases across the United states, pending bankruptcy court approval.

There will be 49 leases sold off this month, and another 229 leases auctioned off in July, according to A&G.

There are seven in New Jersey that will be auctioned off: Deptford, East Brunswick, Freehold, Mays Landing, Paramus, Totowa and Watchung. There’s another New Jersey David Bridal in Maple Shade that is not listed as being sold or auctioned off.

“Across our David’s Bridal stores in New Jersey, we intend to fulfill orders without disruption or delay, and customers should not expect to see any change in the unparalleled service level they have come to expect,” Cook continued.
