David Letterman has interviewed Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskyy for his Netflix talk show, the streaming service announced Thursday.

The discussion between Letterman and Zelenskyy — whose country has been under attack from Russia since February — took place before a “small live audience” in Kyiv, according to Netflix, where the “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction” episode will air “later this year.”

Netflix only gave the timing of the interview as “recently,” and has not responded to a request for more details.

Letterman, who had long-running talk shows on NBC and CBS during a stretch of more than 30 years on network television, has attracted a wide range of newsmakers to “My Next Guest,” including former President Barack Obama, who appeared alongside the 75-year-old host for the show’s January 2018 debut.

Obama, having served two terms as president, had left the White House only a year prior to sitting down with Letterman at City College of New York. It was his first post-presidential interview. Among the topics the pair discussed was how Obama “slept in” on his first day as an ex-president, which he said he “was pretty happy about.”

Netflix gave no indication of what was said between Letterman and Zelenskyy.

The Biden administration has sent more than $15 billion in military assistance to Ukraine. Tensions between Zelenskyy and President Biden caused the U.S. president to lose his “temper” during a June phone call, in which Biden told his eastern European counterpart the U.S. would be sending $1 billion in aid, only to be asked for more assistance, NBC News reported Sunday. Aid from the U.S. and its allies has helped make resistance possible for Ukraine as Russia’s unprovoked invasion intensifies.

Recent Russian attacks on infrastructure have caused worsening blackouts in Ukrainian cities including Kyiv, where Zelenskyy is headquartered. The capital city’s power grid was said to be operating on “emergency mode.”

Prior to becoming Ukraine’s president in 2019, Zelenskyy, 44, was a television star who played a fictional president on a comedy program called “Servant of the People,” which also appears on Netflix.

In his four seasons with Netflix, Letterman has done 24 programs, featuring guests including Howard Stern, Malala Yousafzai, Will Smith, Dave Chappelle and Kanye West.
