David Tennant is set to host a BBC Four documentary on Doctor Who as the show celebrates its 60th anniversary.

According to Radio Times, the doc will see Tennant travelling back through the BBC archives to tell the story of the classic era of Doctor Who.

The show will also feature archive interviews from actors who've previously portrayed the Time Lord including the late William Hartnell, who played the First Doctor, through to Sylvester McCoy, who played the Seventh Doctor.

Tennant himself, who played the Tenth Doctor and will soon return for the 60th-anniversary specials as the Fourteenth Doctor, will also talk about what it's like to play the Time Lord, and how his experiences compare to his predecessors.

The hour-long programme will air on Wednesday, November 1.

Earlier this month the BBC announced that over 800 past episodes from the show's classic era will be released on iPlayer next month, ahead of the 60th-anniversary celebrations.

However, the BBC has confirmed that the first four episodes of the series, starring Hartnell, won't be available as part of the archive on its launch due to rights issues.

The archive will include all other available Doctor Who episodes plus spin-off shows Sarah Jane Adventures, Torchwood and Class, as well as documentary series Doctor Who Confidential.

Speaking after the announcement, showrunner Russell T Davies said: "I'd like to thank the BBC for all the hard work, to get this massive back catalogue under one roof, at long last.

"I'm so excited for new viewers – imagine being 8 years old, spending winter afternoons exploring the 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond.

"And we're determined this won't be a dusty museum – we have exciting plans to bring the back catalogue to life, with much more to be revealed!"

Doctor Who returns later in 2023 on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Meanwhile, in the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on Max.
