Earlier this week, David's Bridal LLC filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and announced plans to layoff more than 9,200 employees in the United States, which may include 147 Wisconsin workers.

According to a news release shared Monday, stores will remain open and the company will continue to fulfill orders, while the company searches for a buyer.

"Our business continues to be challenged by the post-COVID environment and uncertain economic conditions, leading us to take this step to identify a buyer who can continue to operate our business going forward," said James Marcum, CEO of David's Bridal, in the release.

However, a layoff notice filed with the Department of Workforce Development, received on April 14, says 147 Wisconsin workers will be laid off due to "facility closure." All of the Wisconsin David's Bridal locations — Greenfield, Brookfield, Grand Chute, Madison, Ashwaubenon and Eau Claire — are listed on the notice.

Laura McKeever, the head of PR for David's Bridal, said in an email to the Post-Crescent that the company is “pursuing a dual-track process inside of bankruptcy to sell our company.” She said they issued notices with the Department of Workforce Development as required under federal law.

“We hope to achieve a going concern sale and to preserve as many David’s jobs as possible,” her email read. “Of course, no outcome is certain, but we want to assure the market and our employees that we are working as hard as we can to find a buyer to bring the iconic David’s brand into the future.”

"Going concern" is an accounting term which suggests a business has the assets needed to continue functioning and is not in immediate danger of liquidation.

David's Bridal, based in Pennsylvania, previously filed for bankruptcy in 2018, but recovered by the following year.
