Davidson-Davie Community College returns to all remote learning due to spike in COVID-19 cases

A Davidson-Davie Community College college graduate has begun a new scholarship at his alma mater.

Davidson-Davie Community College has returned to remote learning for most classes due to an increase in COVID-19 cases.

On Thursday, the college put out a statement that the college will “transition to virtual learning for most classes starting January 14 through January 30 to slow the spread of COVID-19.”

Students will receive communications from instructors regarding specific class arrangements and campus offices will remain open as employees work staggered schedules.

According to the Center for Disease Control COVID data tracker, Davidson County has seen 2,477 new cases in the past seven days. This is a 67.8% percent increase in new cases of the virus.

The positivity rate, which is the number of positive results from all COVID-19 cases given, is at 32.5%. On December 1, the positivity rate was 11% in the county.

As of Friday, 46% of people in Davidson County are fully vaccinated and 60% of people have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers someone fully vaccinated two weeks after they've been given a single-dose shot (Johnson & Johnson) or a second shot (either Pfizer or Moderna).

Davidson County continues to be in the high category for community transmission. The CDC determines community transmission to be high if there are over 100 new cases per 100,000 people and over 10% percentage positive in the past seven days.

As of Friday, Davidson County has had a total of 33,279 cases and 351 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020.
