Day of baseball will honor WWI veteran Clay Kiser in Redfield Saturday
Clay Kiser Day is scheduled for Saturday in Redfield.
For nearly 100 years, American Legion Post 92 has sponsored Redfield baseball teams that wear the monogram CK on their hats and uniforms. Saturday, the World War I veteran will be honored with a day of baseball at American Legion Centennial Ballpark.
Kiser, a 1911 Redfield graduate, died in service after being injured when a shell exploded during the Second Battle of Marne on Aug. 15, 1921. According to historical information, it is believed he was one of the first people from the Redfield area to serve in WWI.
Saturday's schedule follows.
Centennial Field
Noon: Redfield Teeners vs. Warner-Ipswich-Northwestern
2:15 p.m.: Redfield Legion vs. Warner-Ipswich-Northwestern, doubleheader
7 p.m.: Redfield Dairy Queen vs. Redfield Pheasants
9:45 a.m.: Awards
9:50 p.m.: Music and fireworks
Field One
4:20 p.m.: Redfield Junior Pee Wees
5:30 p.m.: Redfield Midgets
Field Two
5:30 p.m.: Redfield Junior Peewees
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the historic Chicago and Northwestern Railroad Depot will also have a display honoring Kiser. It will feature pictures of the various teams he played for.
According to information from the depot, after Kiser's remains were sent back to the U.S., a horse-drawn carriage traveled down a Redfield street. It was described as "one of the largest military funerals in this part of the state." Kiser is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery inside his family's plot.
